About designers

One of the best things about design is the range of things you can do. Every single thing you look at has most likely been designed from the computer you're using right now to the layout of your school.

A few types of design:

  • Visual (sometimes known as graphic design) - using type, symbols, illustration and colour to communicate a concept or message visually, seen in signage, magazines, posters and more.

  • Product - this encompasses many types of product from furniture to electronic or mechanical products. A product designer might be concerned with improving existing products or creating entirely new ones.

  • Eco - A Eco Designer designs products that take account of environmental concerns or sustainability with the aim of improving existing products or resolving certain environmental concerns.

  • Architecture - An architect is a type of very specialised designer. This includes the art and science of designing building and other large structures but also the design of an urban and other built landscapes.

  • Service - This is a relatively new concept concerned with the design of services as a product such as digital television, transport or even shopping.

  • Web - Another relatively new type of designer who designs websites and web services.

Many designers today, however, are multidisciplinary  - they work on several different types of design instead of just one or even make up a whole new design discipline!
